Mission Basilica School has long been known as one of the leading Catholic schools in Orange County. The faculty has always worked tirelessly to ensure that our young charges are reaching their full potential academically, and also so that they grow to become well-rounded individuals and responsible members of society. To that end, next year we will debut an exciting new program that is sure to go far toward facilitating both those goals.

The PBIS Program

PBIS, or the New Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports system, is a national program that will be tailored to address the needs of our school and student body. It is designed based on the notion that reinforcing positive behavior is just as likely to lead to a student achieving their goals as corrective action is to help with misbehavior. The program will be implemented in the middle school, and it is called “Love and Logic.” It will include behavior matrices that are easy for the children to understand, and there will be a rewards program in place that will serve as further incentive for good behavior. The goals of the program are twofold. It is first intended to make the current procedures and policies clearer. At the same time, we believe that positive reinforcement will set up a structure whereby the students become intrinsically motivated to follow the rules.

We at Mission Basilica believe that the data this program provides will allow us to further tailor our teaching system and style so that future students will receive the full benefit of what we’ve learned. The bedrock of our beliefs, including the molding of young minds through compassionate service and ethical conduct, and the expanding of creative potential, will be on full display in this program. We want the children to be fully engaged and enthusiastic about the work they’re doing and the values they are learning, and we are confident that this system will allow that to occur.

These children and young adults are the nuclei of the next generation. As such, it is incumbent upon us to instill the right values in them. Hard work coupled with spiritual growth is the formula that allows it to happen, and this program is the ideal way to get that point across in a way that is enriching and fun. We are thrilled to bring this new idea to a classroom setting, and we are confident that this program will lead to positive results. More details will be forthcoming as we draw closer to the launching of this revolutionary system.
